Last fall, the BBFs found a chrysalis in their herbs. They gave it to us, and we put it in our butterfly pavilion.
Yesterday, it emerged. It's an eastern black swallowtail. Here are some pictures of it. I took them through the netting, so they aren't the best pictures.

One year, my daughter found a monarch butterfly crysalis. She put it a jar on our fireplace, and it actually emerged and she had the thrill of turning it loose in our backyard. (The area is a monarch nesting ground on their annual migration.) She'll never forget it, and I won't either!
